"Best salon software" is one of those searches that returns a dozen "top 10" listicles, most written by the software companies themselves or by affiliate sites that get paid per signup. We're a salon software company too, so take that into account - but we also built this comparison to actually be useful: real pricing, real limitations, and an honest answer about who each platform is actually built for.
We compared five platforms Canadian salon, spa, and barbershop owners consider most often: Zivly, Fresha, Vagaro, Mindbody, and Booker.
How We Evaluated Each Platform
For a Canadian small business, the "best" software isn't just the one with the most features - it's the one that fits how the business actually runs here. We weighed five factors:
- Currency and pricing stability - is the bill in CAD, or does it move with the exchange rate?
- All-inclusive vs. add-on pricing - are reminders, reporting, and payroll included, or sold separately?
- Client-facing marketplace - does the platform help you get discovered by new clients, and at what cost?
- Hiring tools - can you post open roles and collect applications without a separate tool?
- Support hours - is help available when a Canadian salon actually needs it?

Zivly - Best Overall for Canadian Salons
Zivly is built and priced specifically for the Canadian market. The Team plan is a flat CA$10.99 per service provider per month, with front desk and reception staff always free. Every plan includes online booking, automated SMS/email reminders, client management, payroll, reporting, and a free marketplace profile with a shareable SEO subdomain (like abc.zivly.ca). Zivly also includes built-in job postings for hiring stylists and barbers - a feature none of the other platforms on this list offer natively. Independent professionals can run their entire business on the Solo plan for free, forever, with up to 300 bookings a month.
Best for: independent stylists and barbers, small to mid-size salons and spas, and any Canadian business that wants predictable CAD pricing with no add-on surprises.
Fresha - Best Known, But Pricing Has Changed
Fresha built its reputation on being "free" booking software, and it's still one of the most recognized names in the industry globally. But its pricing model shifted in 2025: for Canadian accounts, Fresha now charges a CAD subscription - reportedly CA$19.95 per team member per month on the Team plan, or CA$29.95/month on the Independent plan - on top of a commission, reportedly around 20% with a minimum of CA$6, on new clients who book through the Fresha marketplace, plus standard card processing fees. It doesn't offer a built-in hiring/job postings feature. See our full Zivly vs. Fresha comparison for the details.
Best for: salons that want access to Fresha's large international marketplace and are comfortable with a commission-based new-client fee.
Vagaro - Feature-Rich, But Add-Ons Add Up
Vagaro is a long-standing, feature-dense platform used by salons in several countries, including Canada, where it bills in CAD. Pricing is reported to start around CA$35/month for the first bookable calendar/employee, with additional calendars scaling up incrementally from there. Several commonly-used features - like a custom website (MySite, reported around CA$30/month), text marketing, reputation management, and cloud storage - are sold as separate monthly add-ons rather than bundled in. We cover this in detail in our Zivly vs. Vagaro comparison.
Best for: larger businesses that want deep feature customization and don't mind picking add-ons ร la carte.
Mindbody - Built for Large, Multi-Location Studios
Mindbody is an enterprise-grade platform, originally built for fitness studios and expanded into the spa and wellness space. It's powerful for large multi-location businesses but comes with a correspondingly higher price point and a steeper learning curve than most independent salons or small teams need.
Best for: large, multi-location spa or wellness chains with dedicated admin staff to manage the platform.
Booker - Enterprise-Focused, Custom Pricing
Booker (now part of MINDBODY's parent company) is another enterprise-oriented platform, typically sold with custom, quote-based pricing rather than a transparent published rate. That makes it harder to evaluate against flat-rate competitors, and it tends to be a better fit for larger operations than for independent or small-team salons.
Best for: larger spas and salon groups that want a dedicated sales process and custom contract terms.
The Bottom Line
If you're an independent stylist, barber, or esthetician, or you run a small to mid-size salon, spa, or barbershop in Canada, Zivly is built specifically for that - CAD pricing, no add-on traps, a free marketplace, and hiring tools included. If you're running a large multi-location operation with dedicated admin staff, Mindbody or Booker's enterprise tooling may be worth the higher cost. For everyone in between, Fresha and Vagaro are reasonable options, but both start at a higher base price and come with add-on and commission fees that Zivly simply doesn't charge.
